US says Israel has agreed to the framework for a Gaza cease-fire. Hamas must now decide

RAFAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — Israel has essentially endorsed a framework of a proposed Gaza cease-fire and hostage release deal, and it is now up to Hamas to agree to it, a senior U.S. administration official said Saturday, a day before talks to reach an agreement were to resume in Egypt.

International mediators have been working for weeks to broker a deal to pause the fighting before the Muslim holy month of Ramadan begins around March 10. A deal would likely allow aid to reach hundreds of thousands of desperate Palestinians in northern Gaza who aid officials worry are under threat of famine.

The Israelis “have more or less accepted” the proposal, which includes the six-week cease-fire as well as the release by Hamas of hostages considered vulnerable, which includes the sick, the wounded, the elderly and women, said the official.

Senior US official: 'Israelis agreed to deal, ball is in Hamas's court'

The framework for a hostage deal that would include a six-week pause to the Gaza war is in place, but it is contingent on a positive response from Hamas, a senior US administration official said on Saturday.

“Right now, the ball is in the court of Hamas and we are continuing to push this as hard as we possibly can,” a US official told reporters during a background briefing on a deal that the US hopes will be in place by the start of the holy month of Ramadan on March 10.

“The Israelis have accepted .. a six-week cease-fire” as part of a “phased deal” that would “enable a significant surge of the humanitarian work that has to be done,” a US official said.

The deal is structured such that it can be transformed into something more long-lasting, he said.

Maybe just maybe Israel hasn't 'officially' agreed to a cease-fire.
Netanyahu has promised they won't allow Hamas to remain there knowing what they're capable of... so why would they essentially give Hamas six weeks to re-arm?

I hope Netanyahu will make an announcement so we know for sure.

The Israelis “have more or less accepted” the proposal,
I think not.
This is more wishful thinking from the U.S. than fact.
Netanyahu has stated over and over they won't stop until Hamas is defeated and the abductees brought home.
But methinks Biden et al only hear what they want to hear.
And keep the pressure on Bibi because they need "an accomplishment" for the coming elections.
They truly don't care about Israel.

From what I've read this morning, Israel has agreed to the "framework", but hasn't green-lighted the deal, and have demands of their own. It's hard to get the truth when the US govmint seems to be putting out false information about these ceasefire deals with regards to Israel.

So much pressure is being put on Israel to just end this war so the world can grant Gaza statehood and make it harder for Israel to protect itself from that evil neighbor. The smartest thing Israel could do is fight on full bore, annihilate hamas and deport all the residents of Gaza, annexing that land back into Israel where it belongs

Yes. Israel has demands of their own, and Hamas won't comply.
Israel wants for instance a list of names of living abductees.
But Hamas won't provide it without "great concessions" of Israel.
You can't deal with such people.

Gaza deal close to collapse: Hamas refuses to list living hostages

Israel has denied its participation in Cairo negotiations, citing Hamas's refusal to provide information on the wellbeing of the hostages.

The negotiations for a Gaza hostage and ceasefire deal were near collapse, Israeli media reported on Sunday, after Hamas refused to provide information on the status of the remaining hostages in the Strip.

Representative from Hamas, Qatar, and the US have arrived in Cairo, Egypt, for a renewed round of hostage negotiations. The Israeli delegation is thus far absent, with a KAN News report quoting an official as saying that the delegation "will not leave until a response from Hamas is received."

The Hamas delegation is being led by the terror organization's deputy chief in Gaza, Khalil al-Hayya, a senior Hamas official told Reuters. Al-Hayya was the Hamas official leading the Islamist group's delegation for the Cairo hostage negotiations in February. He has previously acknowledged that Hamas has military capabilities in Rafah.

As per Israeli reports, Qatar informed Israel that Hamas's response leaves little room for progress in talks.

Yes. Hamas has apparently rejected the deal. From an email I received: "While rejecting the deal, Hamas called on Arabs to storm the al-Aqsa Mosque on Ramadan. In a televised speech, Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh called on residents of the West Bank and Jerusalem to barricade themselves inside the mosque and 'break the siege.'"
